Art Night, London, 7 July 2018

For Art Night 2018, Pervilion occupies a lofty, timber-framed barn at the threshold of London’s youngest city farm. Specially commissioned works by Sasha Pirogova, Clementine Keith-Roach and James Knight & Michael Knight explore the history of the area as a destination for escapism and refreshment.

In a major new performative work, Sasha Pirogova explores the transformative effect of the garden. Penetrating the rigid and dissonant manmade space, the living world raises our consciousness of humans as part of it, and evokes a feeling of unity.

Clementine Keith-Roach harnesses the tradition of the ornamental water feature as an invitation to relax and reflect. Milk substitute trickles from the breasts of Belle Dam, while hands and feet reach out to the environs at all angles. Clementine says: ‘Just as the mother's breast lactates at the infant's cry, Belle Dam spurts arcs of milk substitute in response to the groan of the city.’

Refraction: Oasis, 2018
Performance, sound

In an improvised sonic collage, the Knight brothers use modular synthesis to manipulate field recordings from Oasis Farm Waterloo and the local area along with commercially available vinyl. James says: ‘The process of refraction builds a sonic landscape that resonates with Vauxhall’s legendary place in the history of London nightlife and culture that stretches from the clubs and bars that stand today at Vauxhall Cross to the Pleasure Gardens of the 19th century and beyond. It’s being squeezed out – it’s perverse.’
